那两块摇粒绒面料横在长桌上,一白一紫。我伸手摸了摸,白的那块挺软,上面的颗粒干净饱满;紫色那块硬挺厚实,毛粒同样规整。
办公室里很安静,只有老李和老张的争论声,像两只在空水桶里瞎撞的苍蝇,嗡嗡作响,怎么也飞不出去。老李把白的那块抓起来抖了抖,说:“得用软的,这叫一体绒。两面的绒毛都是从同一块坯布里硬生生‘抓’出来的,同根同源,中间没有半点胶水。克重虽然只有三百克,但空气在里面是活的,热气能直接透过去。”
老张把紫的那块扯过去,冷笑了一声:“这年头谁还单穿一体绒?得用我这块复合绒。这是面布、防风膜加里布三层合一的法子,用胶粘在一起,骨感硬朗。风吹不透,下小雨的时候水珠子在上面滚,根本淋不透。”
“你那中间隔着层胶水和膜,横竖一点弹性都没有,拉伸起来跟拉一块皮带似的!”老李反驳道,“高强度运动起来里面全是闷汗,人在衣服里就像是进了大棚。”
“不闷汗怎么叫保温?”老张翻了个白眼,“你要是光为了透气,那在大圆机上直接织个渔网更透气。”
老李不甘示弱:“你这复合的经不起折腾,洗水厂多高强度洗几次,或者往烘干机里一扔,中间的胶水脱了,布面就会起泡、分层。到时候衣服就变成了好几层,看着像癞蛤蟆的后背。”
老张把报销单往桌上一拍,声音高了几分:“只要纤维不烂,买这衣服的人一辈子能洗几次?人家要的就是那个抗风的硬挺,穿在身上就像套了一件毛绒绒的铁甲,整个人都支棱起来了!”
他们两个人围着那两块绒,话赶话地从“一张皮”扯到了“两张皮”,从胶水扯到了水洗分层。老李觉得老张不懂一体绒没有束缚的天然回弹,老张觉得老李不懂复合绒堆到四百克以上的绝对抗风。
我觉得他们说的都对,又觉得他们说的都没什么用。
面料在工厂里被大圆机抓出毛绒、或者在复合机里涂上药水的时候,工艺就已经把它框死在了各自的宿命里。要了透气的天然弹性,就得忍受见风透的毛病;要了防风防雨的骨感,就得接受它像块板砖一样的阻尼感。两全其美?那是造物主才有的权力。
我坐在位子上看着他们。这些详尽的图表和关于优缺点的争论,在干净的纸面上看起来像是一套精密无比的算法,但到了我们这个落了灰的车间里,无非就是多加几克胶水或者少抓几把毛的区别。
后来我发现,我们争论的其实不是哪一块面料更高级。我们只是在用“同根同源”和“多合一组合拳”这类词汇,来打发这个没有订单的下午。
衣服最后总归是要做出来的,买这件衣服的人也总归是要在冬天里缩着脖子等公交车。那时候,他既不会去高强度运动出汗,也不会在暴雨里行走。他只是在这个寒冷的季节里,需要一件能裹住身体、带有温度的化纤织物罢了。
最后,老李和老张都不吵了。
那两块摇粒绒继续在长桌上躺着,一体的没有更松软,复合的也没有更硬挺。我把两块布重叠着卷在一起,塞进了样品柜。
反正到了明天早上,客户总会发来新的邮件。
他们会用一堆诸如“既要有高强度的防水抗风,又要具备没有任何束缚的极佳天然回弹”这种自相矛盾的废话,让我们把这两块布重新拿出来,在这个版房间里,再吵一遍。
Two Fleeces Argued All Afternoon, and Neither One Won
The two pieces of microfiber fleece lay across the long table — one white, one purple. I ran my hand over them. The white one was soft, its pills clean and full. The purple one was stiff and dense, its nap just as even.The office was quiet except for the argument between Lao Li and Lao Zhang, which hummed around the room like two flies trapped inside an empty bucket, bouncing off the walls, going nowhere.
Lao Li grabbed the white piece and gave it a shake. "You want the soft one. This is double face fleece — the pile on both faces is raised directly from the same base fabric, same origin, no adhesive anywhere in between. The weight is only 300 GSM, but the air inside it is alive. Heat moves right through."
Lao Zhang pulled the purple one toward him and gave a cold laugh. "Who wears double face fleece on its own anymore? You need this — bonded fleece. Three layers in one: face fabric, windproof membrane, lining, all laminated together. Structure. Body. Wind can't get through, and in light rain the water beads right off."
"That layer of adhesive and membrane in the middle kills all the stretch," Lao Li shot back. "Pull it and it fights you like a strip of leather. Push hard enough and you're trapped in your own sweat. Wearing it in the rain is like being inside a greenhouse."
"If it doesn't trap heat, it's not insulation," Lao Zhang said, rolling his eyes. "If you just want airflow, go knit a fishing net on a circular machine — that'll breathe just fine."
Lao Li wasn't done. "Your bonded construction can't take the abuse. A few high-intensity washes at the laundry house, or one spin in a tumble dryer, and the adhesive lets go. The layers separate, the surface bubbles up. The whole jacket starts looking like the back of a toad."
Lao Zhang slapped a receipt down on the table, his voice climbing. "As long as the fiber holds, how many times does someone actually wash a jacket in a lifetime? People want the windproof structure. You put it on and you're wearing fleece armor — you feel solid, you feel held together."
They went on like that, circling the two pieces of fleece, chasing each word with another — from single-skin to double-skin, from adhesive to delamination in the wash. Lao Li thought Lao Zhang didn't understand what it meant for a fabric to spring back on its own, unencumbered. Lao Zhang thought Lao Li didn't understand what four hundred grams of bonded fleece felt like pushing back against the wind.
I thought they were both right. I also thought neither of them was saying anything useful.
The moment these fabrics were made — one raised by circular machine into pile, the other run through a laminating line and coated in chemical adhesive — the process had already locked each one into its own fate. Choose the natural stretch and open breathability, and you accept that the wind gets in. Choose the windproof, rain-shedding stiffness, and you accept that it moves like a plank. Have it both ways? That's the kind of power reserved for whoever's running the universe.
I sat there watching them. All those detailed comparisons, all those carefully weighed pros and cons — on clean paper they looked like a precise and elegant algorithm. But in our workshop with its settled dust, it came down to a few extra grams of adhesive or a few less passes of the raising machine.
Eventually I realized we weren't actually arguing about which fabric was better. We were just using words like "same-origin construction" and "multi-layer combination" to get through an afternoon with no orders in it.
The clothes will get made in the end. And whoever buys them will, come winter, be standing at a bus stop with their neck pulled into their collar, waiting in the cold. They won't be doing high-intensity exercise. They won't be walking through a downpour. They'll just need something to wrap around themselves — a piece of synthetic fabric with some warmth in it.
After a while, Lao Li and Lao Zhang both stopped.
The two fleeces kept lying there on the long table. The single-layer hadn't gotten any softer. The bonded one hadn't gotten any stiffer. I stacked them together, rolled them up, and pushed them into the sample cabinet.
Tomorrow morning, the client's email will come.
It'll be full of contradictory nonsense along the lines of must have heavy-duty windproof and waterproof performance while also offering completely unrestrictive, superior natural stretch and recovery — and we'll pull both pieces back out, set them on the table, and do the whole thing again.
