所谓牛仔的氧化,在化学教授的嘴里,是一堆关于靛蓝染料、空气里的氧气、以及紫外线互相催化还原的分子公式。但在车间老工人的眼里,那不过是把一堆活生生的颜色,交给时间去慢慢放血的过程。
靛蓝这种染料挺怪的,它长在棉纱的表面,像是一层没抓牢的皮,只要暴露在空气里,它就在一分一秒地和氧气苟合。这种苟合是避不开的,哪怕你把它锁在最深、最黑的抽屉里,它也在悄悄地变样。

而等到它彻底氧化之后,那层死板的青铁色就散了。空气里的氧气和经年累月的日光,把原本浓得化不开的蓝色一点点啃食、降解,底下的棉纱本色开始泛了出来。氧化后的牛仔,呈现出一种带着淡淡暖意、甚至是有些发黄的陈旧色调。那种蓝不再是刚出厂时的工业色素,而是变成了一种像是在阳光下晒了太久的古旧瓷器,边缘泛着有些复古的灰黄。面料也变软了,上面的折痕不再锋利,而是顺从地贴合了人的体型。
客户在电话里跟我纠结了半天,非要拿氧化后的样子和氧化前的样子放在一起对色。
他拍了张照片发过来,指着两块布的色差说,你看,这两条裤子的缸差怎么这么大,这一条明显发黄、发旧,没有另一条精神。
我说,发黄的那条,在你们高档写字楼的样衣间里挂了整整一年,吹了一年的空调,晒了一年的太阳,它已经老了。没发黄的那条,是车间里昨天下午刚踩完明线、今天早上才打包出来的,它还没开始呼吸。
客户不依不饶,说那不行,大货必须做到跟样衣间里那条发黄的一模一样,不能有这种时间差。

The moment it's exposed to air, it starts its quiet arrangement with oxygen, second by second. There's no escaping it. Lock the fabric in the deepest, darkest drawer you have, and it's still changing in there.
When it's new, it has an unfriendly look about it. Fresh from the factory, the indigo runs deep and dense — a near-rigid blue-black with a cold cast, like a sheet of iron just pulled from water. The fabric is taut, the weave orderly, without flaw or variation, and without any sign of life either. It hangs on a rack like a symbol with no expression, waiting for a body to come along and break it open.
Once it's fully oxidized, that rigid iron-blue disperses. Oxygen and years of accumulated light eat into the original saturated color, degrading it gradually, and the natural color of the cotton underneath begins to surface. Oxidized denim takes on a tone that carries a faint warmth — something aged, slightly yellowed. The blue is no longer the industrial pigment it was at manufacture. It becomes something closer to old porcelain left too long in the sun, its edges gone to a dusty, faintly antique gray-yellow. The fabric softens too. The creases stop being sharp and start conforming, gradually, to the shape of whoever's been wearing it.
The client spent a long time on the phone going back and forth, insisting on color-matching the oxidized version against the pre-oxidized version.
He sent over a photo. Pointed at the difference between two panels and said: look at this shade variation, why is there such a massive batch difference, this one is obviously yellowed and tired, it doesn't have the same presence as the other one.
I said: the yellowed one has been hanging in the sample room of your upscale office building for a full year. A year of air conditioning. A year of sunlight coming through the window. It's aged. The other one — the machinists finished the topstitching yesterday afternoon, it got packed this morning, it hasn't started breathing yet.
The client pushed back. Said that wasn't acceptable, bulk production had to match the yellowed sample room pair exactly, no time differential between them.
I thought that was a fairly bad joke as requirements go. You want a newborn to come out of the womb with the face of someone who's lived sixty years in the weather. That doesn't compute on any abacus.
If you want a new pair of jeans to carry that aged color, you either hang them in front of a window for three hundred days and let the sun exhaust them inch by inch — or I add a few more grams of potassium permanganate and yellow bleach to the wash vat and use chemistry to etch a few years of wear into the fabric by force.
The client didn't want a chemistry lesson. I didn't want to chase a color number that was never going to match. We both went quiet on the line.
